Our filmmaking community has lost a giant in the passing of Jessie Maple, pioneering cinematographer & director. Her story behind the camera is a testament to her craft as the first Black female director of a feature film, but her legacy is so much more. As a civil rights crusader, Jessie Maple fought for equality in our industry, ultimately being admitted as the first Black woman member of the International Photographers of Motion Picture & Television Union in the '70s. May her memory be our continued calling as storytellers.
